Greenhouse U14 Girls Tournament

22nd May 2012

Greenhouse U14 Girls’ Tournament Match Report by Stockwell Park Greenhouse Girls’ coach Jenny Ridgway

The 8th May saw five Greenhouse programmes come together in the first all girls CVL Basketball tournament at Stockwell Park High School. Over 60 girls attended the tournament representing their schools (Stockwell, Norwood, Harris Peckham, Lilian Baylis, Clapton x2) in what turned out to be a very enjoyable, competitive event .

Teams played against each other in pool games to ultimately try and progress to the semi-finals and finals. The standard of the competition was very good and many of the games went down to the wire. The girls showed great ability and potential and all played hard giving 100% every game.

The first semi-final between The Norwood School and Stockwell was very physical with both teams displaying a lot of hard work and determination to try and progress through to the finals. Stockwell came out on top 14 – 8.

In the second semi-final Clapton A faced Harris Peckham in a very close battle. Neither team were going to give up easily and the game went right down to the final minutes. Clapton A finally took the victory to meet Stockwell in the final.

The final saw a rematch of an earlier pool game where Clapton A narrowly took the win by 1 point. Stockwell did not want a repeat of this and were after revenge. Both teams struggled to score and convert easy baskets. However when it mattered a vital fast break lay-up put Stockwell in the lead by 1 with 30 seconds to go. Both teams gave there all and fought until the end. Stockwell managed to maintain their lead and became the 1st winners of the Greenhouse Girls.

Jenny Ridgway , Greenhouse Girls’ Head coach at Stockwell, said: “ It was great to see so many girls in one place enjoying competitive sport and representing their schools so positively. The games were highly contested and played in a good manor throughout the day. Hopefully this will be the first of many.”

Sharon Simpson, Head of PE at Stockwell Park, added: “It was delightful and most pleasing to see the sports hall filled with girls playing basketball and inspiring new female players to take up the sport. The Stockwell Park girls played with grit and determination to succeed it was their team effort that made them vicarious at the sound of the final buzzer.”
